B i o g r a p h y

Joshua Geddes diverse musical career has seen him conduct Opera, Musical Theatre, Orchestras, Wind and Brass ensembles, and Choirs. He currently in his 6th year as Musical Director of the Boroondara Symphonic Band and his 2nd with the City of Traralgon Brass Band.

Joshua has conducted orchestras in Germany, UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. Recent highlights include working as a Kapellmeister at the Berlin Opera Academy on productions on Die Zauberflöte and The Crucible, assisting Clark Rundell on the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s metropolis new music festival, and working as musical director for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria’s double bill of HMS Pinafore with Cox & Box.

In 2016 he was awarded the Rosemary and John Hopkins award for conductors from the University of Melbourne, where he had earlier studied under Professor John Hopkins. He graduated with a Masters degree from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide with Dr. Luke Dollman. Joshua has further honed his craft in masterclasses with world-renowned teachers including Jorma Panula, Colin Metters, Mark Heron, and privately with David Kram, and Graham Abbott. In 2014 Joshua was selected to take part in the 12th Interaktion Conducting workshop in Berlin where he conducted some of the best musicians in German orchestras, including members of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Berlin Staatskapelle. Joshua has also participated in masterclasses with the Orchestre Régional de Cannes, Orchestra of the Bulgarian State Opera Burgas and the Janacek Philharmonic.

He initially trained as a hornist studying at the Victorian College of the Arts and was a member of the Australian Army Band Melbourne.

 

​A passionate and committed music educator, Joshua has been a tutor for the undergraduate conducting course at the University of Melbourne and has assisted Benjamin Northey and Dr. Luke Dollman as part of Melbourne Youth Music Summer School’s conductor development program. He currently teaches at Melbourne Grammar and Gennazano FCJ College. Joshua regularly presents master classes and has adjudicated at the Sale and Bendigo Eisteddfods. He is and avid coffee drinker who loves the café culture of Melbourne, and a supporter of the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League.
